hello internet
i used to be pretty good at html... when i was 10. over a decade later and ive forgotten almost all of it. but the modern internet and social media are soul sucking and i miss the quirky side of the internet. where you could just shout into the void and it was okay if nothing shouted back.
Question of the Week: How do you get your news?
i listen to a lot of npr. i grew up listening to a lot of npr. i kind of blame my need for constant background noise to my parents having npr on all day long (until strange currency came on when we immediately turned it off). in college most of my news came from social media. after the last us election, i wanted to stop listening to the news and bury my head in the sand, but that is not safe or productive. i don't trust tiktok or anything meta touches so i have come back to npr. i listen mostly in the morning before work while i sip my coffee. my partner and my whole immediate family all listen as well so its fun to text them whenever i hear a story i find interesting. im more in touch with state news which i never saw on social media. i am exposed to more good news. like a zoo just welcomed two baby elephants! the downside is that i am not in touch with local news. i want to know whats going on in my small town but the local radio stations (that aren't just religious broadcasts) are all pretty pro orange. i used to use fb exclusively to know about events happening in my area but they aren't being posted anymore for some reason. i've had some success going to local hubs and checking out flyers they have. my fiance really wants to subscribe to the local newspaper which i think we will try but i'm having visions of old newspapers piling up and collecting dust.
ive returned to the commonplace (book)
in high school, i kept a notebook and digital camera in my backpack. the notebook was full of lists, ideas, and things i wanted to remember later. the digicam was for photos of flowers and cats. sure, i had a smart phone, but it didn't work inside the cement buildin i went to school in and i just liked the more tangible feel of handwriting and point and shoot. i drifted away from all the tangible and replaced it all with my smartphone. then covid happened... we all know what happened during covid. now i am coming back to my notebooks! (which apparently have always had the name 'commonplace book') im using my digicam, again mostly for photos of flowers and cats. and ive come back to the old internet. because even without social media i still find myself wanting to shout into the void
